There are people whose careers are measured by promotions, titles, or years of service.
Then there are people like Jackie Bowen.
For more than four decades, Jackie Bowen built a life defined not by recognition or accolades, but by faith, family, service, and relationships. Whether sitting across the desk from a customer, mentoring a young banker, coaching a child, serving his church, or volunteering throughout the Cochran community, Jackie approached each opportunity with the same steady purpose: to leave people better than he found them.
Ask those who know Jackie best about his career, and the conversation rarely begins with banking. Instead, they’ll tell you about his character.
They’ll describe a man of unwavering integrity whose word could always be trusted. A humble leader who never sought the spotlight. A devoted husband to Laura for 41 years, loving father to Brett and Brittney, and proud grandfather to Sadie, Millie, Bowen, Emmie and Briggs. A man whose greatest accomplishments were never found on a résumé. A man whose Christian faith wasn’t simply something he believed; It was the foundation upon which he built his life.
For Jackie, banking was never simply a profession. It was another way to serve people.
That simple philosophy shaped a remarkable career spanning more than four decades, but more importantly, it shaped generations of relationships throughout Cochran and Bleckley County.
Jackie’s journey began in Unadilla, Georgia, where he developed the values that would guide him throughout his life. After graduating from Middle Georgia College in 1981 and earning a bachelor’s degree in business from Valdosta State University two years later, he began his banking career in 1983 as a management trainee with Citizens Bank in Vienna. Within just two months, he was promoted to loan officer.
A year later, Jackie accepted a position as a loan officer with Cook Banking Company in Cochran, beginning a relationship with the community that would span more than four decades. When Cook Bank was acquired in 1992 and became Citizens Bank of Cochran, Jackie was named Vice President. Five years later, at just 35 years old, he was promoted to President of Citizens Bank of Cochran, a position he held until 2004.
His leadership in the Cochran banking community continued when he joined Cochran Bank and Trust as City President in June 2004, serving there through 2013. In January 2014, Jackie took his position as president of State Bank of Cochran, a role he has held for more than 12 years, including through the bank’s transition to BankSouth.
While the institutions and titles changed throughout his career, Cochran remained home. Over the years, Jackie watched businesses pass from one generation to the next, families grow, and customers become friends. Through many of life’s milestones, he remained a familiar and trusted presence in a community where his roots continued to deepen.
While many people know Jackie as a banker, those closest to him know that banking has always come behind two things: faith and family.
Laura describes a husband whose Christian faith has guided every part of his life. It shaped the way he treated people, the way he led, the way he served, and the decisions he made each day. His faith was never something reserved for Sunday mornings. It quietly influenced every conversation, every relationship, and every opportunity to serve others.
That same foundation became the cornerstone of the family he and Laura built together.
Through decades of community events, church activities, civic meetings, and the many responsibilities that come with community banking, Laura faithfully walked beside Jackie. Together, they built a home centered on faith, raised their family, and now enjoy time with their grandchildren while continuing to share a commitment to serving the community they love.
Ask Jackie what matters most, and those closest to him know the answer begins at home.
In a small town, the lines between banker, neighbor, coach, church member, and friend often blur. For Jackie, those roles were naturally connected. The same people who visited his office during the week might sit beside him in church on Sunday, serve with him on a community board, or cheer alongside him at a local ballfield.
Customers came to Jackie for financial advice, but many found something more: someone who listened, made time for them, and understood that sometimes people needed encouragement as much as they needed a loan.
One long-time colleague observed that Jackie valued the relationship with the customer as much as, if not more than, the business itself. Others recalled that people often sought his counsel beyond financial matters because they trusted his judgment and appreciated the genuine care he showed everyone who walked through the door.
That trust was built over decades, one conversation and one relationship at a time.
Service has always been a defining part of Jackie’s life. While he spent his career serving customers through community banking, his commitment to Cochran and Bleckley County extended far beyond the walls of the bank.
Over the years, Jackie devoted his time and leadership to organizations that helped strengthen the community, including the Bleckley County Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, Industrial Development Authority, Downtown Development Authority, Hospital Authority, Cochran-Bleckley Recreation Department, his church, youth athletics, and numerous educational and charitable initiatives. Whether chairing a meeting, coaching young athletes, teaching Sunday School, or supporting local economic development, he approached each opportunity with the same sense of purpose and commitment to serving others.
Those who know Jackie understand that community service was never something he did to be recognized. It was simply an extension of who he was. His desire to make Cochran and Bleckley County a better place to live reflected the same values that guided his work at the bank: invest in people, strengthen relationships, and leave your community better than you found it.
Jackie eventually became President of State Bank of Cochran, but those who worked alongside him rarely define his leadership by the title he held. Instead, they remember the example he set.
His office door was always open, his advice was thoughtful, and his leadership reflected the same humility, patience, and integrity that customers experienced every day. He encouraged others to grow, celebrated their successes, and viewed every challenge as an opportunity to teach rather than criticize.
Several former employees credit Jackie not only with helping shape their careers, but with influencing the kind of leaders they became. His greatest lessons weren’t delivered through speeches or formal training. They were demonstrated through the way he treated people, the respect he showed others, and the consistency with which he led every day.
After more than four decades of serving the people of Cochran and Bleckley County, Jackie is looking forward to a new chapter centered on the people who have always meant the most to him. Retirement will provide more time with Laura, their children, and grandchildren, along with the opportunity to enjoy the family, faith, and community that have shaped his life for so many years.
While his daily role at the bank is coming to a close, Jackie’s influence will continue to be felt throughout the community. It lives on in the businesses he helped build, the young bankers he mentored, the organizations he strengthened, and the countless friendships he formed over a lifetime of service.
Looking back, it’s clear that Jackie’s legacy isn’t defined by the titles he held or the years he served. It’s found in the trust he earned, the example he set, and the way he treated people every single day.
For the people of Cochran, Jackie Bowen has never been defined by banking alone.
He has been a devoted husband to Laura, a loving father and grandfather, a man of deep faith, a mentor, a community leader, and a trusted friend.
