Yes. ACH payments are among the safest electronic payment methods available. Here’s why:

  • Regulated by Nacha: The ACH Network is governed by strict operating rules that protect both senders and receivers.
  • Encryption & Authentication: Financial institutions use bank-level encryption and multi-factor authentication to secure ACH transactions.
  • Error & Fraud Protections: ACH payments can be reversed or disputed in cases of unauthorized transactions, unlike wire transfers.
  • FDIC-Insured Accounts: Funds held in your bank account are protected by FDIC insurance up to applicable limits.

To further protect yourself, always verify account and routing numbers before initiating a payment, and monitor your accounts regularly for unauthorized activity.

As part of the updated NACHA operating rules, financial institutions are required to obtain fraud prevention procedures from businesses that originate ACH transactions. This requirement helps strengthen security across the payment network and ensures your business maintains best practices for preventing unauthorized transactions.

What We Need From Your Business

Your organization’s fraud ACH fraud prevention procedures. If you have written procedures in place, please provide a copy to your banker when you initially set up your ACH with BankSouth, or update your processes.

If you do not have written fraud prevention procedures, here is an example of a fictional company, ABC Company, that has its ACH fraud prevention procedures written.

  1. Dual Authorization – All payment requests must be approved by two authorized employees before release.
  2. Callback Verification – Any request received by email, text, or phone for changes to account numbers, payment amounts, or beneficiary details requires a callback to a pre‑verified phone number.
  3. Restricted Email Instructions – The team will not process payment instructions that come solely from personal email addresses or unverified senders.
  4. Daily Review – A designated team member reviews all outgoing ACH and wire activity at the end of each business day.
  5. Internal Escalation – Any suspicious or unusual request is escalated to the Finance Manager before action is taken.
