Fraud Watch June 2026: Fake BankSouth Text, Loan Scams, and Bogus World Cup Tickets

Jun 29, 2026 Fraud Prevention
fake banksouth text message

Whether you’re checking your text messages, applying for a loan, or trying to score last-minute World Cup tickets, scammers are looking for ways to take advantage. Read on to learn how to protect yourself from these latest threats.

Fake BankSouth Fraud Prevention Text Messages

Several customers have reported text messages impersonating a BankSouth Fraud Prevention department. These messages are not from BankSouth and are designed to appear highly official, often claiming you need to complete a “Remote Device Termination” for an unrecognized device (such as an iPad) and providing fake case numbers and temporary passwords. Their goal is to panic you into calling the provided number or replying to the text, so they can trick you into handing over your actual account information or login credentials.

How to Avoid Impersonation Scams:

  • Do not reply to the text, click links, or call the number provided in the message. Contact the organization through a verified phone number.
  • Remember that we will never ask for your password, PIN, or online banking credentials or security codes.
  • If you’re unsure a fraud alert is real, contact BankSouth directly by visiting your local branch or calling (706) 453-2265.

fake loan deposit scamsFake Loan Deposit Scam

Another threat that has targeted BankSouth customers is a lending scam. Scammers posing as legitimate lenders are targeting consumers looking for loans. During the “application process,” the fake lender claims they need your online banking login credentials to deposit a test check and verify your account. Once they have access, they deposit a fraudulent check and instruct you to send the money back to them (often via wire transfer or payment apps) to “prove” the account works before they release your actual loan funds. After you send the money, the original check bounces, the fake lender vanishes, and you are left responsible for the lost funds.

How to Avoid This Loan Deposit Scam:

  • Never share your online banking login credentials or security codes with anyone — no real lender or bank will ask for this.
  • Be cautious of lenders who ask you to send money back to “verify” your account to secure a loan.
  • Research your lender thoroughly before submitting an application or personal information.

fake world cup ticketsWorld Cup Ticket Scams

Dozens of World Cup fans have reported being stranded outside Atlanta Stadium after spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on tickets through third-party resale sites or social media that never actually transferred to their accounts. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup underway in Atlanta, scammers are taking advantage of desperate fans trying to secure last-minute seats. Fraudsters are also using the hype to push fake ticket giveaways and “urgent” sales on social media to steal payment information.

How to Avoid World Cup Ticket Scams:

  • Purchase tickets directly through FIFA’s official ticket portal rather than third-party resale sites or social media sellers.
  • Resist the urge to act fast for “limited time” offers. Offers requiring immediate action are usually scams.
  • Don’t pay with a wire transfer, gift card, or cryptocurrency if you must purchase through a reseller. Use a credit card so you have some fraud protection if the ticket doesn’t arrive.
