A crucial part of being your trusted financial advisor is keeping you informed about the evolving landscape of financial scams. In Episode 4 of the BankSouth Fraudcast, we sat down to discuss some eye-opening insights recently shared at the Georgia Bankers Association annual meeting. Specifically, we took a hard look at the newly released 2025 Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) report. This overview captures the core lessons from that conversation and the practical steps you can take to stay secure.
The Numbers Behind the Epidemic
If you feel like you are hearing about scams more often these days, the data proves you right. According to the 66-page FBI IC3 report, the scale of cybercrime has reached unprecedented levels.
2025 Internet Crime Numbers:
1 billion Complaints: In 2025 alone, there were a billion fraud complaints filed. That breaks down to roughly 3,000 complaints every single day.
$20.9 Billion in Losses: Financial losses hit nearly $21 billion, representing a 26% increase over the previous year and a massive $19 billion jump compared to a decade ago.
The Hidden Iceberg: Unreported Fraud
As alarming as those statistics are, they only tell part of the story. During the podcast, our team highlighted a disheartening reality: these numbers only reflect what is actually reported.
Many victims of fraud never come forward. Often, people feel too embarrassed to admit they were scammed. In other cases, the stolen amount might seem too small to matter. A victim might think, “It was only $50, I’m not going to bother the FBI over $50.” But when you multiply that $50 by 3,000 victims a day, 365 days a year, the true financial impact on our communities is astronomical.
Why Is Fraud Growing So Fast
If we look back to 2015, the landscape was vastly different. So, what is driving this massive spike in financial crime?
The answer lies in technology. The explosion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and “deepfake” technology has given scammers highly sophisticated tools to impersonate loved ones, executives, and legitimate businesses. Furthermore, the barrier to entry for criminals has never been lower. Today, bad actors can easily find “Fraud 101” tutorials on public platforms like YouTube, effectively teaching a new generation how to commit these crimes.
How We Can Fight Back Together
When fraudsters share tactics online, the good guys have to communicate even better. If these incidents remain isolated, and if victims stay silent the scammers win. At BankSouth, we believe the best defense is a strong, educated community. We want to help you Be Ready, Be Responsive, and Be Respectful of the risks in today’s digital world.
