Veterans Day is a special day to take a moment to stop and reflect on the impact that veterans have on our easy-to-take-for-granted everyday freedoms. This year, we have the opportunity to pay tribute to two extraordinary individuals from right here in Greensboro, Ginny Dornheggen and Jon Holtzman.
Meet 1st Lieutenants, Ginny Dornheggen and Jon Holtzman. Ginny served in the Army Nurse Corps, and Jon was a helicopter pilot. Ginny and Jon are proud veterans that have not only shown dedication by serving their country but continue to assist fellow veterans within their local communities. They, along with support from fellow members of the Reynolds Veteran’s Association (RVA) in Greensboro, GA, each serve their community and younger generations of veterans with honor and distinction. They have faced challenges abroad and at home, but their stories are filled with courage and sacrifice, and are ones that we will not soon forget.
Take a few minutes to watch and listen as Ginny and Jon share their stories about being in the service and how they and the RVA have helped the local community of veterans.
The Reynolds Veteran’s Association started as a comradery of veterans coming together as a social organization. In 2003, a golf tournament began, and members began focusing on ways to raise funds to support fellow veterans. One of the early members discovered that in Fort Gordon in Augusta, they had developed a program to treat returning veterans from the Middle East. RVA was able to buy new equipment for them, including new computers and a van allowing them to travel and get reacquainted with the world. To this day, RVA continues its support of the local Veteran’s hospital in Augusta, specifically helping with programs and equipment addressing brain injury and post-traumatic stress.
In addition to their support of the hospital, RVA has worked on various activities to aid the student veterans at the University of Georgia. One of these includes a $100,000 scholarship fund for student veterans. There are four students a year awarded scholarships, which includes 32 students to date.
BankSouth has been a proud supporter of RVA in its mission to support local veterans through programs like these. To get more information on the Reynolds Veteran’s Group or to donate funds to support their mission, visit ReynoldsVeterans.org.
