Smart Holiday Shopping Tips
Scammers love the holidays because shoppers get distracted and eager for deals. As you prepare for holiday spending, be cautious of deep discounts from unfamiliar retailers, strange social media ads that seem too good to be true, or unsolicited texts and emails with shopping links.
What’s more, these fraudsters may lead you to fake websites that steal your debit card information, or even install a virus on your device. A few extra seconds of caution can help keep protected.
How to Protect Yourself:
- Shop only trusted retailers you know.
- Check for https:// and a lock icon () in the browser bar.
- Watch out for spelling errors or unusual website addresses.
Watch Out for Fake QR Codes
The use of fake QR codes (or Quishing) is where scammers try to trick you into visiting fake websites or downloading a virus. These codes may show up in emails, websites, texts, flyers, or even posted in public places. Once scanned, they can steal your personal or financial information.
How to Protect Yourself:
- Scan only codes from trusted sources; avoid any from unsolicited messages.
- Double-check the URL (if possible) before entering any information.
- Using your phone’s built-in features to preview links before opening them.
How to Spot Job Scams
According to the FTC, Americans have lost $91M being duped into phony job postings in 2025.
Scammers know that many people look online for new employment opportunities. They create fake job postings on social media, job boards, or even by sending emails and texts that look professional. These “jobs” may offer unusually high pay for little work, ask you to pay upfront for training or supplies, or require you to share personal information like your Social Security number or bank account details before you’re even hired. Don’t fall for the tricks these crooks try.
How to Protect Yourself:
- Research the company. Verify through official website or trusted job boards.
- Don’t pay to get hired. Real jobs never ask for upfront fees or training costs.
- Protect your information. Never share Social Security or bank details until you have confirmed it’s legitimate.
